You are able to read this letter because by accident of birth you have been blessed with normal intelligence. Any of you who have children have faced the possibility that your child might be born with mental retardation or other developmental disability. All of you are just one serious head injury away from a life of disability.
This letter will introduce you to a group of people living in the greater Riverside area who through no fault of their own are developmentally disabled and are working very hard every day to improve the quality of their lives.
Also I want to introduce you to a group of concerned parents, professionals and local business leaders who are joining together to support Ability Counts, Inc. in providing work opportunities for more than 500 individuals with developmental disabilities residing in the greater Riverside area.
The State Budget Crisis has reduced funding available for vocational programs in California. And while the vocational program is not severely compromised, many of the needs of consumers can not be addressed in the current funding environment.
One such item is climate control in our buildings. Through fund raising and a recent Golf Tournament, "Friends of Ability Counts" was able to provide the funds to purchase evaporative coolers for two of our warehouse buildings. Now we need to purchase heating systems to make the work environment comfortable during the winter and spring months.
Your Friends of Ability Counts membership would help us meet our goal. Also, you could participate in other fund raising activities as well as receive our newsletter which would keep you up to date on other activities to benefit those people served by Ability Counts, Inc.
Due to funding reductions in California, these people need your assistance.
